Teri Small is a patent attorney in the Intellectual Property Practice Group. She focuses her practice on intellectual property, with an emphasis on patent prosecution in the chemical engineering, life sciences, and mechanical arts. In addition to preparing and prosecuting U.S. and international applications, Teri also provides patentability, patent validity, freedom-to-operate, and design-around analysis for her clients. She also advises clients on how to align their worldwide prosecution strategy with their business objectives. This involves making sure that clients understand the scope of their patent protection, helping clients develop a cohesive prosecution strategy for patent applications filed around the world, and drafting applications and arguments that preserve the broadest claim coverage possible. Prior to joining the firm, Teri worked as an attorney in the life science subgroup of a mid-size firm in Chicago where she worked with clients to manage and prosecute their global patent portfolios.

Recently, Teri successfully prosecuted numerous applications related to chemical looping processes. She also presented a four-part webinar series focused on patent prosecution and enforcement in twenty-five emerging and developing countries. Some of the clients she worked for included biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical companies and research universities. During law school, Teri was a member of the Chicago-Kent Law Review, Moot Court Honor Society and the Intellectual Property Law Society. She graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. Teri holds a master’s degree in environmental engineering and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
